An EMS device is also called a muscle stimulator: it is a device that mimics athletic efforts. The device consists of a device (usually battery-powered) that generates weak electrical impulses, and connected to it are a few electrodes that you stick on the skin at the level of the muscles you want to stimulate.
Through the electrodes on the skin, the device delivers small, electrical impulses to the motor nerves that control your muscles. Those nerves, in turn, signal the muscles to contract.
In this way, muscles and muscle groups can be trained very specifically with an EMS device. For example, to rebuild them after an illness, accident or injury, but also for athletes who want to train more a specific muscle group.
How do you use an EMS device?
Modern EMS devices are very easy to use. They contain several pre-installed programmes specifically tailored to certain training goals: for example, endurance training, muscle building, developing dynamic strength, improving circulation or preserving muscles after injuries. Most machines also have recovery and massage programmes. So, it is not difficult to match an EMS machine to your needs.
You can use the device at home or even at work, but for getting optimal results from the treatment, it is better to get advice from your doctor or physiotherapist beforehand.
Getting started with EMS in 5 steps
1. Clean your skin and apply the StimPads electrodes in the right place.
2. Connect the StimPads electrodes to the EMS device.
3. Select the appropriate programme and set the intensity.
4. Start.
5. Clean up the electrodes, clean your skin and give your body the rest needs.
Note: apply the electrodes to clean skin!
It is important to apply the electrodes on clean and dry skin. This way, conduction works better and the electrodes last longer. You should therefore cleanse your skin beforehand, for example with a specially designed cleansing spray. To make the electrodes stick better, you can lightly moisten the skin with your finger.
Never place an electrode on broken or irritated skin. Do not wear the electrodes while bathing, showering or swimming.
Tip:
Store your electrodes in the fridge. This way they stay usable for longer.
